Marine Regulations
Keeping Pace with Change
As ship owners around the world find themselves facing a growing number of new government and environmental challenges – including one that effectively bans high-sulfur fuels from being burned in the world’s ports – CIRCOR is offering commercial marine solutions that meet and exceed the demands of the new regulations.
Low-Sulfur Fuel Solutions
Among the array of new requirements are the marine pollution (MARPOL) Annex VI Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships‚ which state that the burning of high-sulfur fuel oil is not permitted within designated emission-controlled areas (ECAs). The MARPOL regulations require emissions from main and auxiliary machinery to be kept within strict limits.
They also require ships at berth for more than two hours to use marine fuel with 0.1 percent sulfur content‚ a demand that forces ships to switch to a low-sulfur‚ low-viscosity fuel during their stays in port. The low viscosity and poor lubricity of this fuel have a tremendous impact on a ship’s machinery‚ especially its fuel pumps.
CIRCOR understands the ramifications of this change and has responded with a pump solution that assures owners and operators that their ships can cost-effectively use low-viscosity‚ low-sulfur fuel.
Results
The CIRCOR low-sulfur fuel solution meets the MARPOL regulations and delivers:
- Leak-free operation
- Extended intervals between necessary service requirements
- Reduced costs
- Fewer man-hours and less expense for cleaning
